Biking on Crete
Rory and I had no clue as to what to do with ourselves when we woke up this morning, however, Rory came up with the genius plan of renting some mountain bikes and going exploring on those. It was such a brilliant idea and one that I would recommend for any holiday.
Thanks to GPS on Strava, we had a rough idea of a destination and a rough idea of how to get there so off we set. Cycling on the wrong side of the road is so bizarre but you get used to it pretty quickly and we were on quiet roads so it wasn't a huge deal. Cycling around a foreign place is such a great way to get sight seeing locally, the views we got were tremendous and we got to free wheel down a massive hill with a twisty road (as you're going around a corner on the wrong side of the road from normal at speed, the panic that goes through your brain is something else!)
We ended up in Girano, which is a little beach with a café and there is also a cave which you can explore (we couldn't go inside as it wasn't it's open season). The beach is lovely, although there was a lot of sea urchins on the rock surrounding. However, as we cycled, we didn't have any swimming stuff so couldn't take a dip in the sea. Instead, we amused ourselves with exploring the rocks and the caves surrounding the sea and having drinks and lunch in the café near by.
The cycle back didn't seem as hard as the cycle there, probably because it was cooler by this time so we seemed to cycle back a lot quicker than we came. We will definitely be cycling the next time we go on holiday no matter where we end up! We went along into the town where we are staying for dinner which was yummy and got a free shot of raki when we left, followed by a couple of drinks at the hotel!
