Moving The Goal Posts

It has been fascinating with all things Yes & No in the political playing field lately. Tomorrow will see some historical moments, especially if a Yes vote wins. I am not Scottish, but a proud British Englishman. That is not to say I "hate the Scots", absolutely not! But, I would be saddened to see Scotland go if it does happen. I feel it would not benefit us both (and Wales and Northern Ireland). There is so much we cannot predict and that is the part that scares me.

Amongst the usual fear areas: What will happen to the NHS, Currency, Europe, Council Tax, Education, Policing, Corporation Tax etc, it is the "little things" that has been bothering me over the last few days.

For example if the yes campaign succeeded, will they replace all the road signs, road markings and car number plates with their own. All of which are, at the moment, synchronized with the British system. Replacing all the plates alone would cost an absolute bomb.

What about the Postal service? All the post boxes (encrusted with a certain crown!) will have to be replaced......unless they can remove the crown cheaply like Irish did. New stamps, new vans, new uniforms, new bicycles?

The BBC?

Text messages & phone calls? Would we (Scots and Brits) be charged the international rate?

Would we need passports to cross the boarder? (probably not, as the Irish/English tend not to ask when crossing the Irish Sea). But just a thought.

And the main issue I have is the Scottish population, which is just over half of London's population alone. So I do wander where the money is going to come from in terms of taxation to support all the public services.

As for the Politicians, I think they are ALL hiding something. In my view the SNP are not giving enough reassurance on their plans. The real reason for Labour supporting the No campaign is the fact that they desperately don't want to lose their seats. The Tory's are not exactly convincing with their own No campaign either - in election terms, they would be quite happy for Labour to lose all those seats!!

But hey if a yes vote does go ahead, then good luck to Scotland, because at the end of the day it is, like England, a great country.
