Newcastle life

Newcastle town walls

This is a section of the town walls near Stowell Street, illuminated at night.

After work we went on a historic walk with Newcastle city guides called, "in sickness and in health" which took us around the city pointing out previous sites of medical interest such as the site of the old "lock house", the previous medical school sites and the old infirmary. Most of the places have no trace of the previous building, such as the old infirmary stood where the centre for life is now and the medical school was where the train tracks are coming out of central station! By the time we got from castle keep to the town walls, it was dark and raining. I like how the walls are lighted up at night so took a photo to blip.
We actually excused ourselves after an hour of the tour as it was raining and my husband forgot his coat. We went to a lovely Greek restaurant in the Bigg market for dinner before driving home.
The Newcastle city guides give really interesting tours around the city and know an amazing amount of local information. It only cost £4 each (cheaper for people over 60) but that goes towards training and advertising, the guides are all volunteers and don't get paid. Information is available from Newcastle tourist office. One of the guides today said this was the fortieth tour this year!
