Caspian tern
Sterna caspia or Tara nui
About 1000 breeding pairs are thought to be round NZ. They spend time around the coast and mainly breed there, though some do breed inland. They feed on fish etc by plunge diving. They are the largest tern. Their main enemies apart from people are black-backed gulls, who take the eggs and the chicks.
