Back to school
I've spent the last few years studying- its been three years of training, assessments & exams - but all in something I know I'm good at, I enjoy and done in a really positive way.
I didn't actually do too badly at school, 10 O'levels , 4 A levels and only dropped out of Uni because I liked work more - but the point was I really don't remember enjoying anything at school apart from football & girls - and I quickly worked out that you didn't actually need school for either of those. Even then I think I was highly dissatisfied with the way I was taught - certainly at the school I went to creativity and freedom of expression wasn't encouraged - neither was a desire to excel - rather the pursuit of the average - a creation of a uniformity seemed to be the ethos.
Since I started working in the outdoors -often with people who may not have excelled academically, I've encountered a much more holistic learning experience - and I hope that's something I pass on - in my man cave I've a little pyramid of learning- it shows how we learn ourselves - with being lectured at (my schools favoured method) scoring a 5% retention - discussion (actively discouraged at Woods Lane) comes in at 50% - whilst teaching to others hits a huge 90%.
A lot of this is forefront in my thoughts at the moment as I'm starting night-school tonight (and am somewhat apprehensive at the thought of being back in a class room) - and also because I'm about to go and run the 2 day conference of the association - and more importantly our Training Trust - an organisation that truly offers a learning 'experience'.
