Where custard goes to die...

We had a delicious (as always) dinner at my Mums tonight. She even had some desserts for us! How lovely!

One of them was rhubarb and vanilla pie!

'Ooh, have you got any custard' says I...

My brother Graham decides to go and see.

He finds a lonely carton of good for you custard which was to be used by november of this year!

'Ideal!' says I...

He then goes searching for some 'real' custard...

*** now to interject here that my stealthiest of mothers is a stately 5'1" tall. Her upper kitchen cupboards (set back say 5" or so from the worktop) are on the lowest shelves at maybe (a guess) 4'7" so the shelf above that is at least 5'2", quite probably higher...? so she seldom sees what lurks at the back of these shelves without going to fetch steps. She is an incredibly busy woman and has no time for step fetching***

Back to the brother...

He finds some of the afore mentioned 'real' custard.

I was 18 when some of this went out of date. It probably has a good two years of edible shelf life before it becomes deemed 'out of date'. I turn thirty this year!

I enjoy the odd rummage around my mums food cupboards. She still has things with the Safeway branding on it and Asda Farm Stores. Its good to know that these bastions of marketing are being preserved with the preserves (some of which are so out of date they were teaching their young and discussing environmental issues) and only removed to the squeals of my mum telling us how we are not nice to her for doing such things in between bouts of her laughter and falling about the couch!

Good times. And all had with the custard of old in the cupboard.
