On The Pond 5 - Owlbeech Wood

After a rather tough and busy day at work I went for a walk in the woods nearby. This is a pond bay - a local term for an earthen dam used to dam up a stream to create a pond. This pond was clearly a good sized one - more a lake than a pond, but the bay has been breached a very long time ago and the area behind the bank is overgrown with trees and bushes. It still is boggy and it can be clearly seen that it was a pond. The bay marks the edge of the nature reserve and I think what lies beyond is in private ownership.

This area is ironworking country, but I have been unable to find any evidence of this in connection with this pond site. Interestingly, it is not marked on any map that I have seen and when, by whom and for what purpose it was built remains a mystery.
