Into nothing she fades

We spend a large portion of our formative life being told what to wear, what music to listen to, how to behave, what not to say / think and so on. We are taught to ignore our individuality and to "blend" into the public / social mass, to be "not diffferent". Why do we need to sublimate ourselves this way... to immerse ourselves in others till we are no more?
