Ten bob a round
The Royal Oak has sat in the middle of Bookham High Street for nigh on 400 years. The centre part of this building is C17 and the two wings are Victorian. It still has a Public Bar, on the right, and a Saloon Bar, in the centre.
When we first moved to Bookham in 1967 Normous commuted up to London. He soon made friends with a group of Scots who caught the same train in the morning, and they always all got into the same compartment. Firm friendships developed. Every Saturday lunchtime these five commuters met in The Oak for a beer, or two! A round of five beers was just under ten shillings. That's 50p. They had five rounds and then rolled home expecting lunch to be on the table. Once one of the wives joined them but it was not a popular move, so she didn't try it again!
