View to the north of Hawkins Pond
After a busy day, I never seemed to cool down. It is already very mild and somewhat sweaty and we have had the heating on in Science. This was to check that the system is connected and working to the new Energy Centre, formerly known as a heating boiler for when we are temporarily disconnected to the rest of the school.
I went for a pleasant walk at Roosthole which is to the east of Horsham. This is Forestry Commission land and there are miles of rides and paths. My only criticism was the amount of dog poo...... As soon as you go in, you're kicking it about and it''s not just on the ground, but is festering in bags hanging from low branches and in bags in the grass - not good!
I went along part of the High Weald Landscape Trail that passes through here and this view was looking north on the edge of woodland that lies at the top edge of Hawkins Pond. This area is known as the High Weald and it lies on Tunbridge Wells Sandstone. Over thousands of years, streams have cut throgh the clay and sandstone to form deep valleys known as Gills, a word also found in Cumbria and Northaumberland. Traditionally, this area had poor farmland, but the less steeply facing fields are often cultivated with Maize as seen in the distance.
