Listen and learning
Carys and I had a lovely day today. After a week of her being dubious about going to the Tower of London on Friday she asked a TA at school whether she should go or not. Thankfully the TA was very enthusiastic about the idea and so Carys decided to go.
We got there via a train, tube and DLR. We were just in time to look at the poppies before going on a Yeoman's Tour. Our particular Yeoman was very funny as well as very informative and Carys turned to me at one point and said it wasn't at all scary and she didn't know why she had been worried. She also quickly worked out that at the end of each talk if she followed in his slipstream then she would be at the front for the next talk.
I love this picture of her in awe of him and absorbing his every word. I also love the contrast between her and the look of boredom on the girl behind. I hope she always continues to love learning in this manner.
After the tour we went to see the crown jewels, twice. Then we had lunch. When we came out from there the queue for the jewels was at least 250m-300m long so I am glad we went when we did. We looked at the armour in the White Tower (although to be honest one suit of armour is much like the next) and looked at a Norman toilet! Walked the walls, learnt about the menagerie at the Tower and watched some costumed guides re-enacting about the 1st WW.
Lots more to see when she is older. I would have liked to look at the Mint exhibition and the one about the boys in the tower. We both agreed that the exhibition about instruments of torture wasn't one to be viewed today. I now have a mission to find the coronation of QE II on the internet, as whilst waiting to see the Crown Jewels, Carys watched the end and the beginning of the ceremony, but didn't she the actual crowning.
A walk across Tower Bridge and on to London Bridge. From there to Charing Cross, then we walked via Covent Garden to Holborn and home.
Will arrived back from N&P's as we got home. Once Will was in bed, Carys and I settled down to watch last nights Strictly, whilst I tried out a bun ring in her hair and then a fishtail plait. Saturday nights from now to Christmas will be Strictly and trying out new hairstyles on Carys. Happy days.
