Across St Giles
. . . which is the main route into the city of Oxford from its north side. The other three meet it at Carfax (quadrifources, Latin). Across is the side of Balliol College and to the right is the Martyr's Memorial. And who were they? Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley, prominent members of the Church of England who were burnt at the stake in 1555. The grisly event took place in front of Balliol College and was the penalty for heresy at the time. Balliol's main entrance is in Broad Street some 200 metres away.
