The colour scarlet
This morning I went to Haddo House in search of more waxcaps. The lawns of the house are of international importance for fungi conservation; 18 species of waxcap, 17 species of pinkgill and 9 species of coral fungus have been recorded.
Waxcaps are tricky to identify properly but I am fairly sure that this is the crimson waxcap Hygrocybe punicea. As I explained yesterday, Hygrocybe mean watery head and the specific epithet punicea is the Latin for crimson or purplish-red.
