North Ronaldsay Sheep

The North Ronaldsay sheep are renowned for living on the shore with the staple of their diet being seaweed. The flavour this gives to the meat is also well known. When we walked round the shore we noticed they preferred to eat the red ware. They appear to be very ‘flighty’ and difficult to get close to. We saw senior male sheep having a rammie prior to the forthcoming breeding season. It was good to see that there is a good going concern in the old light keepers’ houses for the spinning and finishing of the wool.

With the Current Mrs Creel and A and A we visited the North Ronaldsay School. A and CMC are long term teaching professionals. It was a shame to hear that the school role has now decreased to one bairn. A recent attempt was made to boost the island population which saw the arrival of a new family from Glasgow. Sadly the folk have left, for the Orkney Mainland, due to a lack of work.
