Ready for a close-up
Backblip
LeftHand carefully placing the ranging rods for the photos of Trench 1.
We appear to have an Iron Age roundhouse (or two) with loads of occupation layers and hearths and stuff. A deal of pottery came out, as well, and a few quartz flakes. It's a quite complex site, and difficult to get a grip on what was going on, in the time available. My trench was off to the left of this one and featured more hearths, more pot and lithics, and a big hole (where they kept their stones, apparently!).
Amazing to think that if the waterpipe trench had been dug a couple of metres to the left or right, we would have missed this completely. It's all down to the machine-watching skills of Ol' Hawkeye LeftHand!
The best thing about today, though, was the visit by a birdwatching tour; I was chatting to the guide who alerted me to the presence of wee flock of Black-Throated Divers in the bay. Ya beauty! Another species on the life-list :)
The photos I took were a bit gash, but I may post them Elsewhere, later.
