Not visiting - departing

Why is it that whenever I approach anything to take a photo they decide to leave in a marked manner?
This young gull was wrestling with an enormous lump of cardboard but flew away as soon as a couple of adult gulls arrived.
Glad he was parking in the visitors car park though!
