Florence Andrus
....I'm afraid after yesterday's blip, it would simply be WRONG not to include the other Grandmother....so here's Flo....to complete the picture and narrative of yesterday....I'm afraid I'm not clever enough to have put them in one blip...but am using them both for the work project described yesterday.
The groom in the picture is Alfred Andrus, who sadly died at sea when his ship was torpedoed when he was on his journey home to see his youngest son for the very first time. Alfred was a butcher in the Merchant Navy, and ironically the torpedo order was a terrible mistake....as his ship was mostly civilian crew and German prisoners of war.....so the German officer who gave the order killed hundreds of their own soldiers. We know this, because that youngest son he never met ( my Uncle Harold) researched the whole event and even made contact with that then elderly German officer and indeed corresponded with him by letter and in a kindly way for some years.
