Standing Out

It seems to me
that some people try too hard
not to fit in.

They wear that loud red shirt
to the wedding.

They arrive late for the performance
and disturb the whole audience
as they make their way
to the wrong seats.

On their phones
their voices stand out too.

And if still no one notices them
what are they to do?

Join in the dancing?
Be amazingly good at it
or step on a few toes?

Jump up and down
on the table?

They are quite capable
of that, and much more,
as they attempt to make us
turn around and notice them.

They never seem happy
to just stand with the rest of us
and gaze at the sea, quietly.
