Anyone know how to work one of these?

My neighbour is clearing his Aunt's house and was going to throw this old (antique?) hand operated sewing machine out. He's given it to me and I now need to decide whether to keep it or find it a good home.

First it needs a good clean and then I have to figure out how to work it!
