Hawk Ridge
Evan went camping with Jim at our property yesterday. Today they met Mia, Owen and me in north of the cities and then continued the drive with us up to Hawk Ridge in Duluth.
When birds fly south from Canada reach Lake Superior, the turn west to avoid flying over the large lake, thus sending them straight over Duluth. Several staff members are posted on the ridge to count the raptors and other birds, as well as to identify birds for visitors and share information about the variety of raptors that migrate past each day.
Over a thousand raptors flew over Hawk Ridge today. We saw an Eagle, a Merlin, a Peregrine Falcon, several Turkey Vultures, many Sharp-shinned Hawks as well as numerous other birds and raptors.
Of all our kids, Evan was the most into the trip. After we left Hawk Ridge, we had a late lunch at Grandma's in , saw the lift bridge go up, climbed the rocks that surround Lake Superior. On the way out of town, Evan spotted and decided that he might like to go there someday... if he has to leave home.
