Chocolate vine (Akebia Quinata)
This rampant vine is growing in the garden that my Uncle used to own. He brought many plants from his previous property, and this vine came with them.
It really smells like Chocolate, but is smothering the trees and scrubs.
After Googling it tonight, to find the botanical name & a bit about it, I discovered it is on the National Pest Plant Accord list of unwanted plants in NZ! Not surprising when you see how it grows.
Described as a fast grower, that grows to 10 – 30 feet! I think the ones in this garden are covering more than that.
Akebia quinata is a shrub that is native to Japan, China and Korea, and naturalized in the eastern United States from Georgia to Michigan to Massachusetts. Wikipedia
