meanwhile, i spent most of the evening in the thing that strikes fear in the heart of every digital photographer i know --- wait for it --- yup, external hard drive recovery mode. (thank goodness, i was able to repair the files....but it was no fun at all.)

so in order to avoid this in the future -- the first thing i did after the near-miss, -- and without the usual procrastination -- was to order a new backup hard drive. Whew..
