Fred & Andy

Back on the beach - Phu Quoc

Today we headed south to the island of Phu Quoc for some beach time. The journey was long and we almost didn't get there. After a 3 hour bus ride we got to the ferry port in plenty of time and went to buy our tickets. On arrival at the ticket office and after watching the girl behind the counter serve two Vietnamese customers tickets for the ferry, the sign was suddenly turned round to read "no tickets available" by a ticket tout and the girl behind the counter went along with it saying the boat was full! There was no way it was full and she still had tickets ... then the touts started offering us a cab to another place to get a later ferry to elsewhere on the island etc ... hmmm.

So Andy headed down to the port to investigate. There was another girl just at the entrance to the boat with crowds around her also selling tickets for the boat. Again, we were told it was full and she had no tickets. After asking many times and saying to her that it was obvious that she hadn't sold out as she was still selling to Vietnamese, persistence paid off! She made a quick phone call to the office then sold Andy two tickets. What a scam!! There were four German guys who ended up paying over half as much again to a ticket tout to get on so we were lucky. We got the cheap seats though ... everyone else in nice armchairs and us on kind of sofa type things around a sort of coffee table ... slightly odd set up but perfectly comfortable and not too cramped. An interesting journey ... Freddie made a friend. A Vietnamese girl was fascinated by her and was snuggled up to her for half the trip! Also some strange almost carry on type American and English movies which everyone found funny!

So, we eventually arrived in a Phu Quoc, another short bus journey then a cab and we arrived at our accommodation. Nice place right on the beach. Great to be back on the beach again ... only thing we need to decide now is how long do we stay? :-)
