Milk (and Alcohol)

I took this because I don’t know when I won’t get them any more – because the glass milk bottle is being phased out and replaced by plastic bottles (more information here).
It amazes many friends who live elsewhere that we still have a doorstep delivery. And those from foreign parts just love it (Americans in particular, who think it’s, ‘so quaint’).

I know buying my milk this way is more expensive but I like having it just there, without having to think about it (and I can change the order online). However the main reason I like having a Milkman is the community role … many, many, many years ago my son decided he wanted a paper-round. I was worried sick about him going out so early on his own but he was determined. The day after he started the round my Milkman knocked on my door and asked, “Is that your son who’s doing the papers?”
When I confirmed it was, he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on him”.
I felt so much better.
My current Milkman is the son of that kind man … and I’m sure he’s also keeping an eye out to make sure a few paper-boys are safe.
