Civil War bullet holes
Our local Almshouses are a national treasure - the colonnade is one of only two in the country apparently. There is a lot of history to do with the Civil War in Barnstaple and this door survived - it show the holes from musket bullets.... and also I got a picture of a couple of surviving balls from cannon alongside the original key to the Chapel that serves the current inhabitants.
Sadly the colonnade is now in a state of disrepair and we are gong to be fund raising to replace timbers etc. The lead guttering which has the Tudor Rose on it is also undergoing specialist repair - all at a cost of course! Even though it is a Grade I building we are advised we can't get grants as the amount is not big enough?! I personally think the guestimate of 80K sound huge! What do I know? A lovely old building giving a place for survival to a lot of needy folks..... so we have to keep it going somehow.
