Tilting Tyne Footbridge.
The Millenium footbridge and cycle way across theTyne between Newcastle and Gateshead is raised every day at 12 noon. It is counterbalanced by a high metal arch the weight of which ensures that bringing the footbridge up to 45 degrees uses only a small amount of power. When it has been lifted taller masted ships can move up and down the river.
