Long Slow Distance

Ancient remains

Part of an old building on Lewes High Street, currently the home of a rather old fashioned clothiers (although they have a nice line in pork pie hats).

This detail is of the side of the building that runs along a twitten, but shows the overhanging upper floor, designed to prevent the floorboards within the room from sagging. It was a misconception because the architects used the joists broad sides horizontal instead of on edge, and the floors sagged dramatically yet characterfully.

The lovely detail at the eaves is a recurring motif in buildings of this age.
