I haven't had the sewing machine out for some time now but I decided to make a runner to go across the bed in the newly decorated back bedroom so out it came. I had forgotten just how heavy it was and how unwieldy long pieces of material can be. I made it up as i went along and it has turned out reasonably well and looks good on the bed. I did think about making it look quilted but couldn't quite face all that measuring today. Maybe I'll have a go at it sometime in the future.
Whenever I get the sewing machine out I think about a tiny little attic flat my friend Sue and I had on Albany Road in Cardiff above a decorator's shop. It was up a maze of narrow corridors and had no hot water and just a grill and 2 hotplates for cooking. No bathroom - that was shared with the flat downstairs. We eventually appealed about our rent and got it reduced. We weren't very popular. That was back in 1976, the year I was 21 and the sewing machine was my Birthday present from Mom and Dad. The boyfriend of the time transported it down to Cardiff for me so I could actually have it on my birthday!
It's been very useful over the years making all manner of clothes and household items, not to mention doing repairs. A good investment I think. Thank you Mom and Dad.
