A Day in Macedonia

Macedonia, real Macedonia, the Northern Province of Greece, where the first capital, Pellas, and the second capital, Aigai, are located. Not to be confused with the other one, Former Republic of Yugoslavia Macedonia. (Our guide had an interesting take on that)

We docked in Thessaloniki, a huge port, frequently destroyed and rebuilt in rather ugly styles. We arrived to thick damp cloud and darkness - not the best way to see the city.

But the two sites of the capitals, the original one with the wondrous Macedonian tombs of Philip II and other royals, and the relocated one in Pelkas, were amazing.

The sun came out. We saw fabulous treasures found either in the city or in the tombs, amazingly recently.

Absolutely NO photos in the tombs, but this gold mask, part of a complete ensemble, was just one of the treasures. Plus mosaics, etc etc. Well worth a long and hard day.

And we just made it back to the ship with ten minutes to sailing......... And now to Mount Athos and Philippi.
