Hackfall
After Pilates a group of six intrepid ladies set off to explore Hackfall Woods on the edge of the River Ure near Grewelthorpe. It became famous as a tourist destination on the European Tour in the eighteenth century. Turner visited the woods in search of inspiration and images of Hackfall even made it onto a dinner service bought from Wedgewood by Catherine the Great of Russia.
The woods were changing into their Autumn colours but what was most striking was the number of follies dotted throughout the wood. This is Mowbray Castle deliberately built in this derelict state.
Well worth a visit if you are ever in this neck of the woods.
