Mystery Building!
I tried to go for a walk after work, but it had by then turned gloomy and the ground was like a sponge. The field that began this journal at Itchingfield and has been photographed since contains a mystery building and this is it.
Lower Stapple Gate Field has this structure nearly at the top of the field at its north end. When I first saw it, it was very derelict and covered in trees and bushes. It's since been restored with a new tiled roof complete with decoration, a new door and window. There is nothing inside except a rectangular concrete block. At the back outside is a raised manhole with a rusty pipe that looks like the S bend on a WC! My theory is that it is a pump house. There may well be a borehole or well and there was probably a stationery engine inside that drove a pump which pumped water to the nearby farm or even the former Rectory. The building is not marked on any maps that I have seen.
