Captain Cook Monument on Easby Moor

After yesterday's wet day it was a lovely morning so while others slept in or had a lazy morning we set off to walk to the monument and back. It was a good 4 mile round trip, wet but not too muddy and excellent views throughout the journey.

As we were crossing the Esk Valley railway line we thought we heard the chime of a steam engine whistle. We didn't wait at the bridge but we should have done as a little further up the road we saw the steam of a locomotive and single carriage passing along the line. It turned out it was the A4 Class Sir Nigel Gresley on its way from the North Yorks Moors Railway to Middlesborough and possibly the mainline.

A shower after the walk then into the car for a trip to York. Lunch is always first on the agenda which turned out to be fairly good. While Barbara and Dabid visited the Yorkshire Museum we went to the cathedral. It was an excellent visit. They are restoring the great west window and there was a very interesting and informative display in the cathedral. The undercroft was also very interesting too. So much to read and take in, we could have spent far more time on there and plan to come back next year to see more.
