Bergen harbour
Despite all the tales of Bergen being a town prone to persistent rainfall we arrived on a glorious sunny day and were able to walk the five minutes to the famous harbour with just fleeces and sunglasses! Being near the end of September the usually bustling harbour was fairly quiet with just a handful of streamlined luxury yachts lying against the quayside which was actually useful as it provided me with the opportunity of a good photo from across the harbour of the colourful Hanseatic Merchant Houses which many of you will associate with pictures of Bergen. The other thing I was fascinated by were the beautifully sculpted manhole covers along the harbour which depicted various scenes of Bergen's past. The fish market was busy and there were wonderful displays of a fascinating array of fish, including whale meat, and one lady was busy stirring an enormous tureen of fish soup!
The photo i chose for the blip was taken as we slipped our moorings and had a good view into the very sheltered Vagen harbour and you can just make out the funicular railway which takes you up to the top of a hill for a panoramic view of the town. As we gently cruised down the fjord we passed numerous idyllic sheltered inlets with houses dotted around on the wooded hillside and there were some houses which were an island in themselves. It all looks to be a wonderful place to live and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit today. I stayed up on deck to watch the sun set on the fjord before adjourning to get changed and ready for the evening's meal and entertainment.
