The Viaduct over Scalby Beck at Scalby
The Scarborough & Whitby Railway Company faced many
challenges before the line was opened in 1885. Much of
the excavation work and building of embankments was
done by hand. Walking or cycling over this Viaduct today
gives no idea of the scale of the engineering feat which
lies below and revealed in this image. The line was closed
to rail traffic in 1965. The lines were taken up but the
cinders remain and the Town is fortunate to have such
a legacy which is used more now than ever before by
walkers cyclists and horse riders to gain access to the
glorious countryside linking the two Towns.
