Esplanade

Cairns has a beautiful set-up esplanade, with an iconic swimming pool that you see on this picture. It is freely accessible and it prevents people from swimming in the sea, where crocodiles may be swimming too. We explored Cairns today on a long walk along to Esplanade, to the botanical gardens and back via the suburbs. Tonight the welcome reception of the conference (the four yearly congress of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects) started, good to catch up with so many people! I found out that of the ~650 people here, I know >50 from Copenhagen/Groningen/NYC/courses/conferences. Isn't that amazing? The social insect world truly is social.
