Hospital socks

Obviously they need to throw away of stuff used in my operation and tests. However I these socks they gave me would just be thrown away so I asked for them. I also got compression socks to wear at home to guard against DVT. These socks were for me to pad through to the operating theatre. Surely they could be washed and used again?
