Kissing Gate

An old and rather tired wooden kissing gate I found on a public footpath.

So why is it called a "kissing gate"? According to Wikipedia (and, of course, I always believe Wikipedia), it is called this because the gate merely "kisses" (touches) the enclosure either side, rather than needing to be securely latched.
