Anyone for tennis ?
Behind a peeling green door, at the front of an inauspicious victorian buildings, lies one of Salford's very hidden gems. It seems to deliberately deter people looking too closely.
I had a tour of the building a few years ago. Walking up Blackfriars Rd, we walked through the door into another world. Part gentleman's club (in the very old fashioned sense) and part Harry Potter set (but real). Large flags hung from the ceiling - stars and stripes, Canadian maple leaf, french tricolour, union jack and more. As well as stags heads. Yes the Real Tennis world championships.
It is the Manchester Tennis and Racquets Club, built in 1880, It has a racquets court or two, a real tennis court or two, and a squash court. It is one of only 40 or so places in the world where real tennis can be played - something it shares with Hampton Court and Falkland Palaces. And with a delightful function room and other facilities, it is a very different world to that that lies outside.
