8 level 2 cubes
Thursday math today - went to visit the busy people assembling business cards into a fractal at the JCMB, Kings Buildings. It's part of a distributed effort to build the largest fractal from over a million business cards.
The Menger Sponge is a three-dimensional fractal formed by dividing a cube into 27 smaller cubes (3 in each spatial direction) and taking out the central cube of each face. This procedure is then repeated for each of the remaining cubes ad infinitum. The resulting fractal has zero volume but infinite surface area!
Edinburgh plans to build a level 3 cube which consists of 20 level 2 cubes or 400 level 1 cubes or 8000 level 0 cubes. 20 level 3 cubes will be built in various locations, worldwide which will form a distributed level 4 cube!
Hm, I might have to see if I can build a level 1 cube with the boys...
