The Rursee reservoir - Duren, North Germany
This dam was one of the first HEP power schemes creating this 10km long reservoir. The deep cut valley makes for a very sinuous rowing lake. Shortly after this we cast off from the RWTH Aachen boat club (slipway in centre shot) in a double scull and rowed pretty much the scope of the photo, which is probably about a quarter of the total length. It was quite windy, so we worked in the lees of the hills rowing the lake in 'Thames' fashion. Instead of 'working the slacks', we worked the lees, rowing in the wind shadow and crossing the lake on every bend. Right-hand rule doesn't seem to be the norm here - it is big enough to be a free-for-all (as long as you watch out for the ferries).
