Occupy Central, Hong Kong
Arrived safely if a little jet lagged. I was not going to do much today but was determined to go down to the Umbrella Protest for democracy. It was an awesome sight. The major dual carriageway completely littered with tents and stalls. I walked up through the area and took a few photos. I have chosen this blip because I think the background is so much Hong Kong's Central district and yet it has now been peacefully occupied by mainly students for 27 days now.
There were a number of impressive features:
There was a line of tents which housed a study area so the students were working at their study whilst being in the protest. I cannot think of many groups in protest who would work so diligently. The area is kept tidy and there are so many posters etc most of which was in Cantonese but I could see enough in English to get the simple message that they want to be able to freely vote for their next chief executive. I passed one wall, known now as the Lennon Wall, with thousands of post it messages on it. Apparently one of our students started this wall!
They take many risks taking on the Chinese. There was little sign of the police when I was there today but at some point they make take action. It is a calm and considered protest and I hope it can lead to some change though that will be hard to achieve.
It was great to do it and spend some time there.
