These are baby cacti starting life in a petri dish, and growing their first set of spines. You can see the single cluster of spines at the top of the individual near center These are part of an experiment being conducted by a co-worker in preparation for germination studies on several rare and endangered cacti here in the intermountain west. This is not a rare and endangered species but a member of the genus Echinocereus
