Slow Death of Blue Bridge
Beloved icon - Johnson Street iron draw bridge - lingers on due to the ongoing saga of delays of its demolition and its controversial replacement. I am happy to see it still defiantly doing its duty.
Fondly known as the BlueBridge but I remember the iron bridge as being black and it has memories of mom from the 1960's.
Mom said the draw bridge started to lift while she was walking on it and she held on by her finger tips until it lowered again. She gave us a big cuddle and squeeze joking the whole time, but I think my little bro thought it actually happened. I thought it was very funny because I was 7 and it was silly and corny jokie of an adult to say especially ones mom.
We all hopped in the car when Dad was teaching mom to drive and mom threatened to drive us all off the bridge if dad didn't stop shouting instructions at her - and he did stop. Funny now, but as little kids in the car we gulped!
The demolition cost is now millions of $ over budget plus faulty steel from China is delaying the new bridge... So it looks like the old iron bridge will be triggering memories and hanging on by its fingernails for a little while longer on OnceUponIsland.
