Calderstones Park, Liverpool
Liverpool Parks (6). It's not just gulls, geese and ducks that can be found at Calderstones Park on a fine Autumn Sunday afternoon. It is packed with people, with dogs, children, prams, bikes and everything else.
The park was bought by the Council in 1902 and contains 6 Neolithic sandstone boulders from a dolmen. It was famous for its 16 greenhouses which contained over 4000 species of plants. Sadly, to save money, the council closed the greenhouses in 1984. The plants were moved to a council nursery in Garston, which was in turn closed in 2007 as a result of the outsourcing of the council's garden maintenance work.
