The accidental finding

The Union Canal at Edinburgh Quay

We (my mother, sister TMLHereandThere) had arranged a meeting with some solicitors in Edinburgh this afternoon, to see if they could answer some questions that have been weighing on my mother's mind. They couldn't really, but they have given us some pointers for a way forward.

We had a wild and stormy drive down to the capital, with chaos when we got there because none of us know how to drive in Edinburgh any more, on account of the trams and the priority changes, and ongoing road works! Got to our hotel in time to check in, park and call a taxi to the lawyers' office. This turned out to be not far away, in a new business/waterside district by the Union canal at Lochrin basin in Fountainbridge. This part of Edinburgh was very run down when I lived at no 17 Polwarth Gardens, exactly 30 years ago, just round the corner from my present hotel. (I was a student at Edinburgh university, and stayed on for a couple of years after graduation, working as a nanny and at Bauermeister Booksellers on George IV bridge).

The solicitors' office had full length windows on two sides, giving grand views over the Castle, the Edinburgh skyline, and the Firth of Forth. The company went into receivership earlier this month and has been bought by another law company. We couldn't help wondering if the cost of running such flashy accommodation on several floors had anything to do with their decline!

The meeting over, we wandered over to look at the canal, which I didn't even know existed, back in the day. Thanks to Cailleach's blips, I knew about the regeneration. We took some shots, as above, but the light was poor, so ended up going for a meal and a chat at Zizzi's, where we tried to fill in the rest of the family about the meeting.
Now we're back at our hotel room which has a splendid bathroom (I'm impressed by baths, I have a bit of a thing about them) and thinking about popping down to the bar for a wee drink. Tomorrow we might even see the Kelpies and the Falkirk wheel on the way back to Argyll.
