Flooding in Inverclyde

This morning we attempted to drive to Glasgow, but the heavy rain had caused widespread flooding throughout the Inverclyde area. It took us two hours to drive from Inverkip to the James Watt Dock before we decided to make our way back home.

The disruption saw trains between Wemyss Bay and Glasgow Central cancelled, while there were no services between Port Glasgow and Gourock.

ScotRail advised passengers: “Due to roads also being affected by the weather, replacement transport can not be guaranteed and passengers are therefore advised to consider their own alternative arrangements or not travelling.” In other words they couldn't care how you got to your destination.

The A8 through Greenock and Port Glasgow was also badly hit, with some vehicles abandoned on the carriageway just to the east of Cappielow Park; the road was closed between the Ratho Street and Gibshill Road junctions.

This is the A770 road near the Esplanade where a woman tried to drive her Audi through the flood and got stuck. I spoke to one of the Inverclyde Council staff and he said they had to rescue her, as the water had nearly risen up to the roof of the car. She was in tears, as it was her husband's car she was driving. That will be an interesting conversation tonight.

Note: This is the former railway bridge at Brougham Street in Greenock that carried the Princes Pier Line into the station from the Union Street Tunnel.
