The greening of the year

Beautiful day today. What a difference a few blue skied, sunshiny days make. I even enjoyed an evening seminar on punctuation.

A comma is a very useful little thing. Exclamation marks are overused!! Semi-colons are going out of fashion; dashes are killing off brackets (parentheses). Whatever you do, don't forget the full stop.

The tutor said:
'In English English, dialogue is marked with single quotation marks, whereas American English uses the double mark.'

I'm hoping a friend from across the pond can answer a troubling question. Where, on your keyboard, is the single quotation mark (aka apostrophe) key, and where is the double? On an English keyboard the ' is 2 keys to the right of 'l'. The " is on the same top key as the number 2 but requires the shift key to be used.

I won't get a wink of sleep or have a moment's peace until I know the answer.

:-) does not yet feature in text books on punctuation. It's only a matter of time me thinks ;-)
