Controversy
These two photographs are taken from the same spot, looking in opposite directions. In some ways they epitomise the controversy in Aberdeen about the architectural future of the city. Unfortunately Aberdeen has been nominated for the title of the most dismal town in Scotland. Urban Realm magazine has said the Granite City is in the running for the infamous annual Plook on the Plinth Carbuncle award, on the grounds Aberdeen is "where architecture goes to die".
The Union Square shopping centre next to the station is hailed as an example of where Aberdeen town planning is going wrong. In this particular case I do not agree. It provides a modern gateway into the city from the station. There is a hotel within the complex for those needing it, and provides a covered link between the train and bus stations.
Instead the Station Hotel across the road is an example of traditional granite architecture. It is one of many old granite buildings which are looking a bit run down. How the granite buildings can look is best exemplified by Marischal College which is pristine and very impressive. Unfortunately the council has granted planning permission for another glass box (containing shops offices and a hotel) immediately in front of Marischal College which will do nothing for the appearance of the city.
It is certainly true that modern architecture in the city is decidedly uninspired, and rectangular glass boxes appear to be the norm. Union Square has done much to contribute to the demise of the main shopping street in the city, but it is far from the worst example of modern architecture in the city.
