ski eye view

I went skiing this weekend along the back fence line where the blizzard left large drifts that have melted substantially. This rind ice / snow combination has undergone multiple freeze thaw cycles resulting in a granular crusty material that is quite dense and slick, more akin to a slushy ice rink than fallen snow.

In a few places the frozen horse turds are showing through as large dark green subterranean mounds.

You can't ski until the ice softens up later in the day or your skis and boots will be torn to shreds by the rind ice.

Avoiding the horse turds is key to avoiding a broken ankle.

I can see why the Eskimo have so many words for snow
