Scenes from everyday life

Submarine Art

Passing by the Royal Acdemy at lunchtime today, I glimpsed something intriguing in the courtyard.

At first I thought I was seeing Damien Hirst-like sharks, suspended in formaldehyde. On closer inspection the objects turned out to be rusting models of submarines.

Both striking and extraordinary, this is the front door to an exhibition by German artist Anselm Kiefer which is running until mid-December.

As I know very little about modern art, Kiefer is not someone I've come across before. But now, if I have a free Saturday, I'll be very tempted to view more of his work.
